Two weeks after taking office, the Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the government of Governor Monday Okpebholo of wasting more than N30 billion that was left in the state coffer by the previous administration of Godwin Obaseki.
According to ZINGTIE, the accusation was made during a news conference called the “State of the Nation Address” by Dr. Anthony Aziegbemi, the party’s caretaker committee chairman in the state.
According to Aziegbemi, the governor used the funds to pay “godfathers” who served him during the governorship election on September 21, 2024.
Accusing the APC-led administration of failing to pay the November monthly payment to the state’s civil and public workers, the chairman of the PDP caretaker committee pointed out that the situation was in violation to the previous PDP-led administration, which was led by Governor Godwin Obaseki, when state employees were paid on or before the 26th of each month.
Additionally, he said that within two weeks of taking office, the state’s APC-led government had purchased more than N5 billion worth of cars without following the correct procedures.
The Edo State Procurement Act was in jeopardy, according to Aziegbemi, who also claimed that the administration of Governor Monday Okpebholo was frantically trying to find ways to pass entries for more than N2 billion as inauguration expenses.
According to him, “for 8 years the PDP-led administration paid salaries on or before the 25th of every month, and as of today, they have not been able to pay November salaries even though the Obaseki-led PDP administration left over N30bn in the state coffers.
“What have they done with that money? They have filtered the money away and shared it with their godfathers for the roles they played in circumventing the will of the people
“We are aware that as we speak, nobody in the state has received any credit alert for the payment of November 2024 salary. The government of Godwin Obaseki paid salary 26th of every month
“Governor Okpebholo has procured over N5bn worth of vehicles without proper procurement process which has created a crisis to the extent that the Permanent Secretary Governor’s office is threatening civil servants in Central administration for refusing to accept vehicles due to improper documentation, while desperately looking for ways to pass entries for over N2bn of inauguration costs.”
The Edo State Government responded to the accusations by stating that Governor Monday Okpebholo would reveal the eight-year corruption of the PDP in the state.
No amount of blackmail will prevent the Okpebholo-led government from reclaiming the commonwealth of the people from a few suspicious men, according to a statement made by Fred Itua, the governor’s chief press secretary.
Itua asserted that Monday Okpebholo’s 14-day government was eager to advance Edo State and had not let the people’s expectations deter them.
