Due to persistent physical abuse from her husband, 40-year-old vulcaniser Ayodeji, 32-year-old trader and mother of three Oluwatoyin Ibikunle has petitioned an Akure Customary Court to dissolve her 15-year marriage.
Oluwatoyin testified that her father-in-law allegedly gave her N50,000 in exchange for a relationahip with him and urged her to end the marriage.
She claimed in court that she has been used as a “punching bag” by her husband.
She said, “He’s irresponsible and continually threatens my life, I can’t endure it any longer.” She also revealed that she has been repeatedly harassed and humiliated by Ayodeji.
According to the petitioner, her spouse previously demanded that she leave their house while claiming to be remodelling the flat.
“I moved out purposely because I could no longer withstand his beatings. My father-in-law even urged me to leave the marriage due to the suffering I’m enduring,” she added.
According to her, her father-in-law even asked her to marry him and offered her ₦50,000 in exchange for an affair.
She also asserted that her spouse had abandoned her, leaving her to handle all financial obligations.
Oluwatoyin begged the court, “The love is gone. I want custody of my children to provide them with a proper upbringing.”
Ayodeji responded by denouncing the accusations, calling his wife a miscreant who prioritises her relationships and business over their family.
“My wife left our home and rented an apartment. I attempted to reconcile, but she insisted on a refund for the rent she paid to the new landlord,” he explained.
“I managed to pay ₦15,000 of the ₦20,000 she demanded, but she still refused to return. I can’t live without her. All she cares about is her business and her affairs with other men.”
For the benefit of their kids and to bring harmony back to the family, Magistrate Abiodun Obademi, the court’s president, begged the couple to change their minds.
The hearing was then postponed to January 28 by Magistrate Obademi.
