Niyi Ijalaye, the Ogun State resident electoral commissioner (REC) for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has passed away.

Monday night, following a meeting of RECs at the Commission’s Abuja headquarters, Ijalaye collapsed and passed away.

A source within Ogun INEC, who spoke under anonymity, claimed the Ondo-born REC had retreated to his hotel room following the meeting before the event happened.

ZINGTIE learned that Ijalaye, who was wearing a red cap and a kaftan with stripes in blue, actively participated in every conversation that took place during the meeting.

The two off-cycle governorship elections in the states of Edo and Ondo, as well as the seven open seats in the National and State Assemblies, were the main topics of discussion during the meeting, which was chaired by Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, the chairman of INEC.

In March 2022, Ijalaye was designated as the REC for Ogun State after Olusegun Agbaje, his predecessor, was transferred to Lagos State.

A statement confirming the claimed death has not yet been released by the commission.
