Nollywood actress Monalisa Stephen opened up about her experience in an abusive relationship, expressing shock that she could be subjected to such abuse.

Monalisa Stephen stated in an interview with Saturday Beats that at first he assumed her size would shield her from harassment and that she wouldn’t experience it.

But after receiving her first slap, the actress claimed she understood that violence can impact anyone, regardless of body type.

She claimed that she was shocked the first time she was struck, particularly because the reason for the slap didn’t seem very important.

The content producer claimed that even though the unexpected event came from someone she trusted—despite him not living up to her expectations—it nevertheless left her feeling betrayed.

She claimed the abuse persisted, and when she confronted her boyfriend about it, he defended his actions by claiming his acquaintance had implied that individuals with her kind of personality needed to be “bent” in order to be subdued.

According to Monalisa Stephen, this phrase changed the way she thought about men and their propensity for abuse.

She said, “ I didn’t really know it was a thing. I used to hear other women talk about it, but I didn’t think it would happen to me. I used to believe, ‘I’m a huge woman with a big body, why would anyone want to beat me?’

“But it has nothing to do with your body. You can be abused whether you’re fat or not. When I got the first slap, I was shocked. What led to the slap wasn’t even worth it. I was dazed. The experience was unexpected, and I felt really bad because this was someone I trusted. Even though he was below my league, I lowered my standards to date him.

“This person kept beating me and humiliating me. I asked him, ‘Why do you keep doing this to me?’ and he said his friend told him that people like me need to be ‘bent’ so he could dominate me. That made me see some men in a different light.”

Monalisa Stephen also brought up the fact that, contrary to popular belief, public figures actually experience a great deal of hardship.

The actress pointed out that some people find it simple to date celebrities.
