In a major statement, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, the Labour Party’s vice presidential candidate in the general elections of 2023, confirmed his party’s claim to electoral success. He also offered unhappy members reconciliation and addressed speculations of new political movements.

Regarding the contentious 2023 presidential race, Baba-Ahmed remained steadfast in his position on alleged electoral manipulation while responding to reports of new political options.

“The saying goes that there may be another movement. You know, I’ll not hide it. Let us see it,” Baba-Ahmed stated in the televised appearance, acknowledging but not dismissing reports of potential new political formations.

The leader of the Labour Party promptly reiterated his dedication to the current party hierarchy: “Labour is there. Labour is the only option, and that, like I said in 2022 and 2023, there was only one party that was positioned to win the elections, and Labour Party won the election.”

He went on to make grave accusations regarding the electoral process: “What happened? Of course they switched off INEC, they changed the menu of English language, and they bent our constitution.”

“And I remain by what I said: this serving government remains questionably constitutional,” Baba-Ahmed continued, reaffirming his continuous stance on the legality of the current administration.

Despite these strong remarks, he ended on a positive note by mentioning the party leadership’s internal reconciliation initiatives: “And of course, I will not forget my able chairperson, Senator Nenadi. The high point of her speech is that she’s extending a hand of friendship and brotherliness to whoever is aggrieved.”

These statement coincide with rumored tensions within the Labour Party after its strong but ultimately unsuccessful performance in the 2023 presidential election, with different factions reportedly looking for ways to move forward while clinging to the belief that their candidate, Peter Obi, was the legitimate victor of the race that Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress ultimately won.
