The Ijaw Youth Congress (IYC), Eastern Zone, has expressed concern about a purported plot to remove Governor Siminalayi Fubara from office by the Rivers State House of Assembly, which is headed by Martin Amaewhule.

Ibiso Harry, the chairman of the IYC Eastern Zone, accused Nyesom Wike, the current FCT Minister and former governor, of masterminding the state’s political unrest following a stakeholders’ meeting on Wednesday.

Harry claimed that Wike was behind attempts to overthrow Governor Fubara through his allies Tony Okocha and Amaewhule.

He asserted that Fubara’s refusal to give Wike authority over the state’s resources was the primary cause of the issue. Additionally, he denounced a Supreme Court judgment that blocked Rivers’ allocation, claiming that the decision—which was purportedly influenced by Okocha—would negatively affect the state’s economy and the well-being of public employees.

“We have patiently watched the political crisis perpetrated by Barr. Nyesom Wike, former governor of Rivers State, and Rt Hon. Martin Amaewhule, Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly since Gov. Sim Fubara assumed office 2 years ago as the Executive Governor of Rivers State. But the bone of contention in the Rivers Crisis is the desperation of Wike to perpetually control the resources of the state both from the Federal and State Internally Generated Revenue which the Governor has objected to, resisted, and made it clear that Rivers money is for Rivers people,” he said.

The chairman of the IYC insisted that Fubara be given the opportunity to serve two terms like his predecessors and cautioned against any attempt to remove the governor. Instead of using what he called deceptive methods, he urged political players to have a conversation.

Harry also warned those involved to be ready for the repercussions if they continue with the suspected scheme, stating unequivocally that the IYC will not stand by and permit the governor’s removal.

“We shall resist any attempt to impeach Governor Fubara until he has served out his two tenures of eight years as his predecessors did by every means necessary. If the planners of the Governor’s Impeachment do not desist from their evil plots we should be ready to bear the consequences,” he added.

He called for more action to maintain stability and commended President Bola Tinubu for stepping in to address the state’s political problem.

The IYC urged all Rivers State ethnic groups to oppose any efforts to topple Governor Fubara’s government and reiterated its support for him.

According to Ibim Ibiwari, the IYC’s Chairman Emeritus, their investigations showed a plot to remove Governor Fubara from office. He cited remarks made by Kula politician Lolo Opuene and Okocha as unmistakable proof of this conspiracy.

Ibiwari further underlined that they had already put their lives in danger to assure Wike’s reelection and are willing to do so again to keep Fubara in power.
