Buckingham Palace and the Vatican confirmed that Pope Francis held a private, unscheduled meeting with King Charles and Queen Camilla at the Vatican on Wednesday afternoon, as part of the royal couple’s state visit to Italy.
Originally, Charles and Camilla were expected to make an official visit to the Vatican, but those plans were postponed after doctors recommended a two-month rest period for the Pope following a severe case of double pneumonia.
According to a statement from the Vatican, the Pope welcomed the King and Queen in a private audience and extended his congratulations on their 20th wedding anniversary, which they marked on the same day.
Buckingham Palace stated that Charles and Camilla were pleased the Pope had recovered enough to receive them and appreciated the opportunity to offer their personal regards.
As the head of the Church of England, Charles leads a religious institution that formally separated from the Roman Catholic Church in 1534.
This latest encounter marks the third time Francis and Charles have met, with previous meetings taking place in 2017 and 2019, prior to Charles ascending the throne.
Queen Elizabeth II also visited Pope Francis during her reign, meeting him at the Vatican in 2014.
