The chairman of the House Committee on Housing and Habitat and the representative for Kano’s Kiru/Bebeji constituency, Dr. Abdulmumin Jibrin Kofa, has called for an immediate reconciliation between former governors Rabiu Kwankwaso and Umar Ganduje in order to put a stop to their ongoing dispute.

Jibrin described the split as a barrier for Kano State in an interview with Freedom Radio on Thursday, emphasising the need for all well-meaning individuals to band together to help bring the two political leaders together for the benefit of the state.

Jibrin acknowledged both leaders’ achievements, highlighting their long and distinguished political careers. Kwankwaso’s rise from the Kano State Civil Service to the rank of Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, as well as his roles as a two-term governor, defence minister, senator, ambassador, presidential contender, and potential future national leader, were highlighted by him. Similar to this, Ganduje’s career path started as a civil servant and led to remarkable accomplishments in positions such as Commissioner, Deputy Governor, Executive Secretary, Director in the Federal Capital Territory, and two-term Governor.

“Jibrin noted, recognizing their blessings, that not everyone is selected by God for such positions.”

“Those who understand the circumstances recognise that the source of the unrest stems from the persistent rivalry,” he added, adding that Kano has been greatly impacted by the ongoing battle between the two. Despite their political differences, Jibrin, a supporter of Kwankwaso’s Kwankwasiyya movement, felt it was his personal responsibility to promote peace between the two leaders.

“The matter of politics is distinct; it’s their decision,” said Jibrin, “but as Muslims, it’s our responsibility to bring them together.”

He urged both Kwankwaso and Ganduje to put peace and unity first, recognising their long-standing friendship and expressing his unhappiness with the current situation.
