Senator David Umahi, the Minister of Works, has announced that the Independence Bridge in Lagos will be reopened to vehicular traffic by 3 PM on Friday, following expedited repair efforts.

Speaking to the media in Lagos on Thursday evening, Umahi reassured residents that the section of the bridge under repair would be ready for public use, with a follow-up inspection scheduled in two weeks.

Earlier in the week, the bridge had been unexpectedly closed for urgent repairs, a decision Umahi clarified was made without his prior approval.

Engr. Olukorede Kesha, the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, had previously indicated that the closure could last until the end of May due to the need for extensive rehabilitation.

The unexpected shutdown led to significant traffic congestion across Lagos Island, with many commuters facing delays of several hours.

In response to growing public discontent, Umahi directed that the bridge be reopened immediately, noting that repairs would continue in phases without disrupting traffic.

“By 3 PM, Friday, this bridge will be open to the public, to the glory of God,” Umahi stated. “Our team will work overnight to ensure this is achieved. I encourage commuters to resume normal use of the route from that time.”

The Minister also shared that about 50 percent of the repair work had already been completed.

He added, “Given the quality and scope of what we’ve done, this may very well serve as a lasting solution.”
