The Lagos State Police Command has launched an investigation into an explosion that occurred at a CCTV dealer’s business on Kodesho Street, near the famed Computer Village in Ikeja.
In a statement made on Friday, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, acknowledged that the event took place at about 6:35 p.m.
In order to protect people and property, Hundeyin said, officers from the Mobile Police Detachment, the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit, and other police units promptly rushed in and cordoned off the area.
“The scene of the explosion and adjoining areas were immediately taken over and cordoned off by operatives of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit, the Mobile Police Detachment, and conventional Lagos State Police Command teams,” said Mr. Hundeyin, a chief superintendent of police.
In order to eliminate any possible secondary threats and to facilitate a thorough investigation into the cause of the explosion, he added, EOD specialists combed the area.
The Commissioner of Police, Owohunwa Idowu, reached the scene shortly after the occurrence to do an instant evaluation.
The police asked citizens to maintain their composure while reassuring them that the situation had been brought under control.
According to the commissioner, “people can go about their lawful activities without fear.”
Five people who were in and around the shop at the time of the explosion were injured to varied degrees, according to preliminary findings.
For immediate medical attention, they were brought to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH).
“The Command hereby wishes to assure the general public of its commitment to maintain peace and security throughout the state,” Mr. Hundeyin added.
According to the authorities, more information will be released as the investigation develops.
