France’s Foreign Minister, Jean-Noel Barrot, has cautioned that there could be a potential military confrontation if a new agreement on Iran’s nuclear program is not reached.

Barrot made this statement on Wednesday following a high-level discussion on Iran led by President Emmanuel Macron.

He emphasized that the “window of opportunity” for diplomatic negotiations with Tehran is rapidly closing.

The major European powers are advocating for a diplomatic solution, aiming to strike an agreement that would limit Iran’s uranium enrichment activities by mid-year.

However, Iran continues to deny any intentions of developing nuclear weapons, asserting that its nuclear program is entirely for peaceful purposes.

“The window of opportunity is narrow. We only have a few months until the expiration of this (2015) accord. In the event of failure, a military confrontation would seem to be almost inevitable,” Barrot told parliament.

“Our confidence and our conviction remain intact,” Barrot said.

“Iran must never acquire nuclear weapons.”

He made it clear that France’s priority is securing a “verifiable and durable” agreement to limit Iran’s nuclear activities.
