In Makurdi, the capital of Benue State, two men were roasted to death by a mob after they were accused of stealing a motorbike and trying to rob their victims.
According to information obtained by ZINGTIE, the incident happened on Friday between 12 and 1 am in the Nyon area, a suburb of Makurdi.
According to a witness report, the two suspects were fighting to rob the commercial motorcycle rider, known as the “Okada man,” when he raised the alarm, which led to the culprits’ arrest and lynching.
According to the Okada man, he picked up both passengers at Katsina Ala street in Makurdi town’s High-Level area, and they were traveling to Nyon, according to a witness, keen Terna.
He said “They told me to bring them to Nyon, a suburb in Makurdi. On getting there, they directed me into a street which I followed.
“But because it was too late when he got to a point, the okada man told his passengers to pay him so he could get back but they insisted they don’t have money on them and that they will get the money when they get to his house.
“While he made to leave, they grabbed him and requested that he give them his motorcycle key. When he refused to hand them the keys, they started struggling with him and luck ran out on them when he( okada man) raised an alarm.”
However, Terna lamented that motorbike snatching incidents had been rising in Makurdi.
According to him, the youth and the community have promised that anyone found guilty of crimes will not escape punishment.
He went on to say that the young people who showed up in large numbers gave the alleged bike robbers a hard chase and apprehended them before they could flee.
It was discovered that the young people had thrashed the deceased suspects into submission before lighting them on fire.
Upon being called, SP Catherine Anene, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) at the Benue State Command, acknowledged receiving a report on the incident and mentioned that certain officers had been deployed to the village to ascertain the true nature of the events.
