As plans for the repatriation and burial of the late Nigerian leader become closer, Mamman Daura, the nephew and close confidant of the late former president Muhammadu Buhari, has been admitted to a hospital in London.
According to reports, Daura, a well-known member of Buhari’s inner circle, is presently recovering at an unidentified facility in the UK capital.
The office of Vice President Kashim Shettima, who is now in London to arrange for the repatriation of Buhari’s remains, verified the news of his poor condition in a statement.
Stanley Nkwocha, Shettima’s media assistant, claims that the vice president met with Daura during his visit.
“The Vice President also visited the late President’s nephew, Malam Mamman Daura, who is recuperating in a London hospital,” the statement read.
Daura’s illness comes only days after his nephew, President Muhammadu Buhari, died in London on Sunday after a lengthy illness. When the former president’s remains lands in Nigeria tomorrow, July 15, it will be interred in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State.
Daura, a former journalist and well-known member of Buhari’s unofficial advisory group, has long been seen as an important player behind the scenes throughout the late president’s administration.
Even though the details of the late president’s condition are still under wraps, Vice President Shettima’s visit underscores the close ties between his family and the current Nigerian administration, particularly during this period of national sorrow.
