President Bola Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, laid the foundation for the new eco-friendly headquarters of the FirstBank Group in Eko Atlantic City on Wednesday. The building, set to be the tallest in Nigeria and West Africa, symbolizes Nigeria’s ambition and progress.

According to Shettima, “Today we lay the foundation for a monumental structure in Nigeria’s financial landscape, the First Bank iconic tower, a symbol of our nation’s progress and ambition.” He praised FirstBank for being a pillar of the economy, empowering businesses, supporting families, and driving financial innovation.
Shettima also commended the Chagoury Group for their commitment to Nigeria’s infrastructural growth and hailed the project as a symbol of confidence in Nigeria’s future.
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu presented the certificate of approval for the project, saying, “First Bank, as usual, has led the way. I want to thank the visionaries who created a new city that will be Africa’s model city.”
FirstBank Group CEO Olusegun Alebiosu described the new headquarters as “reimagining banking for generations yet unborn” and a hub for financial innovation and digital transformation
Femi Otedola, Chairman of FirstHoldCo, appreciated the gathering and stakeholders, promising customers financial innovations. He praised the Chagoury Group, saying their creation of Eko Atlantic City is “the ninth wonder of the world.”

The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including governors, business leaders, and government officials. With a legacy spanning over 130 years, FirstBank has demonstrated its commitment to innovation, customer-centricity, and sustainable business practices. The governors of Ogun and Ondo States, Dapo Abiodun and Lucky Aiyedatiwa, were in attendance, as well as the founder of Dangote Industries, Aliko Dangote.
Also present were the co-founders of the Chagoury Group, Gilbert and Roland Chagoury, who were praised by Femi Otedola for their commitment to Nigeria’s infrastructural growth. “I have personally felt that the creation of Eko Atlantic City is the ninth wonder of the world, coming after the eighth wonder, which is the Dangote Petrochemical City,” Otedola said.
Other notable attendees included Chairman of Pacific Holdings, Dr. Deji Adeleke, Tunde Folawiyo, former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, and former Delta State governor, James Ibori.
The governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Olayemi Cardoso, represented the Deputy Governor, Financial System Stability Directorate, Philip Ikeazor, and was also present at the ceremony. The Deputy Governor, Corporate Services Directorate, Ms. Emem Usoro, was also in attendance.
In his closing remarks, Olusegun Alebiosu, CEO of FirstBank Group, said, “This new headquarters is not just about a modern architectural masterpiece; it is reimagining banking for generations yet unborn.”
