Nigerian power distributor Aba Power has declared that its franchised customers in Abia State will see an increase in their electricity rates of more than 50%.

In a notice sent to consumers on its official X handle, the company revealed this information. The Disco claims that the increase was approved by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, or NERC.

Aba DisCo blamed the increase on the macroeconomic conditions it was dealing with.

Additionally, we would like to let you know that the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has recently granted us permission to modify electricity rates, which will take effect on January 1, 2025. With this change, we will be able to mitigate the impact of recent macroeconomic events in Nigeria on our capacity to maintain our high level of customer service while adhering to legal requirements.”
