Benedict Alabi, the former deputy governor of Osun State, has formally declared his ambition to run for governor of the state in the 2026 election.

During a special ceremony at Saint Peter’s Catholic Church in Ile-Ife, Alabi made the announcement.

Alabi, a native of Ikire town in the Irewole local government area and a member of the All Progressives Congress, or APC, added that he made his choice after considering and receiving guidance from God.

The APC in the state is pushing for the governorship ticket to be assigned to the Osun West Senatorial District, which coincides with Alabi’s decision.

The state’s Osun West Senatorial District is home to the Irewole local government.

In the event that former governor Adegboyega Oyetola decides not to run again, party members from the Osun West Senatorial District have also urged the party to zone the giver ticket to Osun West.

Alani said, “I have sought guidance from God and, having received direction, I am informing the good people of Osun that I will run in the 2026 governorship election,” Alabi announced before congregants.

If the incumbent, Governor Ademola Adeleke, decides to run for reelection, Alabi, who was Deputy Governor during the tenure of former Governor Gboyega Oyetola, will be his opponent.

Alabi went on to say that he was confident in his ability to win and emphasized his dedication to Osun State’s growth and advancement.

“We shall emerge victorious by God’s grace. Our goal is to work towards the advancement of our dear state and uplift the lives of our people,” be said.

Referring to Nigeria as a spiritual homeland, the former deputy governor also asked the Catholic faithful and the general public to keep praying for the nation.

“Nigeria is the Jerusalem for Nigerians. I want to encourage families to come together for the progress of our nation,” he said.

Alabi’s announcement sets the stage for what is anticipated to be a fiercely competitive political season and represents one of the first formal entry into the fight for the governorship of Osun in 2026.
