Ademola Adeleke, the governor of Osun State, informed the traditional leaders of the state that no court order had restored the local government chairmen who had previously been ousted by court decisions.

This was revealed by Governor Adeleke at a special meeting of the Osun State Council of Traditional Rulers, which was presided over by Oba Enitan Adeyeye Ogunwusi, the Ooni of Ife.

As part of his discussions with important parties regarding the ongoing leadership crisis in local government, the governor gave a briefing.

Jimi Wole Bada, Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General, and Kolapo Alimi, Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, submitted four court rulings in favor of the chairmen’s dismissal.

“Our state just survived a major threat to the democratic space. We must avoid misinformation, which is why I am here to provide all the facts about the recent local government face-off,” he said.

He clarified that the previous administration hurriedly held a local government election after beating former Governor Adegboyega Oyetola in the July 2022 election. The Action Peoples Party (APP) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) subsequently disputed this decision.

The elections were declared void by the Federal High Court, which also ordered the removal of individuals elected through the defective method.

“The sack order remains valid and has never been vacated by any court of law,” Adeleke stated.

He added that the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) had filed an appeal against the APP ruling, but it had been dismissed because the appellants had not followed through on the matter.

“When the appeal was struck out, the judgment sacking the chairmen stood,” he added.

The Court of Appeal dismissed a different complaint involving the PDP and APC without issuing any reinstatement orders, ruling it premature.

“The 53-page judgment contains no order for the reinstatement of the sacked chairmen,” the governor told the monarchs.

The Osun APC responded by accusing Governor Adeleke of deceiving the traditional leaders.

Kola Olabisi, the party’s director of media and information, claimed in a statement that Governor Adeleke is inciting unjustified anger by feeding the royal fathers misinformation.

The APC demanded that the council chairmen and council members be reinstated in the Court of Appeal’s decision from February 10, 2025.

“A lower court cannot overturn the decision of a superior court,” Olabisi stated.

Instead of requesting decisions from what they called “obscure state high courts,” the party urged Governor Adeleke to petition the Supreme Court if he disagreed with the decision.

In support of their claim that there were no open positions, the APC also cited the Attorney General of the Federation’s recommendation against holding local elections.

The Osun traditional rulers, meanwhile, vowed to inform President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the situation and reaffirmed their support for Governor Adeleke.
