Repositioning the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and resolving its leadership issue are priorities for former Senate President Bukola Saraki.

While revealing that some PDP members will still defect to the All Progressives Congress, or APC, Saraki made the statement.

The PDP has been dealing with multiple levels of leadership instability since the run-up to the 2023 presidential election.

But Saraki is leading a reconciliation committee that the PDP recently established, and he has been hosting meetings to try to end the conflict.

The PDP is currently fighting over who would hold the position of National Secretary, even as the party continues to struggle with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike and the G-5 governors’ disagreement with the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.

Saraki insisted, however, that the former ruling party is still Nigeria’s only strong opposition.

Saraki told reporters in Ilorin, Kwara State, on Wednesday that the PDP is still Nigeria’s only strong opposition party.

According to Saraki: “Some members of the party (PDP) might still defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

“I’m also confident that politicians from other political parties might also join the PDP.

“The only viable opposition party is PDP, and yes, there are challenges, and I have taken it upon myself to do my best.

“I am seeing responses from our colleagues who are also ready to settle our differences.

“I want to use this opportunity to reassure our members across the country that we are doing our best to rescue the party’s situation. We are confident that we will tackle the situation. We are committed to it,” he added.
