Due to suspected cult killings in Owo town, two sisters and six males were taken before an Akure Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.
Ijalade Femi, Ijarotimi Taye, 42, Adeola Bero, 30, Olayemi Ayodele, 20, Ogunseyila Oladimeji, 28, Olabode Ojo, 30, and two sisters, Bisi Gbenga, 25, and Esther Gbenga, are the defendants.
The defendants were charged by the police with five counts: conspiracy, cultism, murder, unlawful firearm possession, and unlawful vehicle possession.
Insp Nelson Akintimehin, the police prosecutor told the court that the defendants and others at large committed the offences between January 6 and January 8, at Owo town.
He asserted that the defendants were members of Alora and Ave secret cults.
The prosecutor added that the suspects used pistol and other offensive weapons to carry out the offences.
According to Akintimehin, the alleged violations were under Sections 516, 319, and 430 of the Ondo State 2006 Criminal Law.
Additionally, it violates Ondo State’s 2006 Secret Cults and Similar Activities (Prohibition) Laws, Sections 1(1) and (2).
Due to a lack of jurisdiction, the court rejected the six defendants’ plea.
In order to await the Director of Public Prosecutions’ (DPP) office’s advice, the prosecutor requested in writing that the court remand the defendants to the Olokuta Correctional Centre.
The defence team, headed by Mr. Daniel Onu, requested an adjournment in their individual responses so that each defendant could submit a counter-affidavit to the prosecutor’s application.
The seventh and eighth defendants were given N500,000 bail each, with one surety in the same amount, by Magistrate Mr. Sunday Adedapo in light of their offence.
The remaining six defendants must be held in police custody until the next hearing, Adedapo ordered.
He adjourned the case until January 27 for reply to the affidavit and ruling.
