Prof. Adegbenga Onabamiro, a psychologist at Tai Solarin University of Education, has urged Nigerians to adopt a modest, frugal, and resourceful lifestyle to cope with the current economic challenges. He also called on the federal government to review its economic policies, which he described as “unbearable and unfriendly.”
Onabamiro made these remarks during the 30th inaugural lecture of the university, themed “From Tangled Web of Life to Clear Path: Counselling Psychologist as a Compass.” He advised Nigerians to “reduce nonessential expenses, find ways to reuse, recycle, and explore alternative sources of income.” Onabamiro also warned of the health risks associated with economic hardship, including high blood pressure, which can lead to heart failure, heart attacks, or death if left unmanaged.
Despite the challenges, Onabamiro encouraged Nigerians to remain hopeful, saying, “There is always light at the end of a dark tunnel.” He also appealed to the government to allocate more resources to mental health services, enhance access to counseling, and train more mental health professionals.
Onabamiro emphasized the importance of investing in mental health, stating that it would have a positive impact on individuals, communities, and society as a whole. He advocated for policies that support mental health in education, workplaces, and communities, which would help reduce the stigma associated with mental health issues and promote well-being.
Additionally, Onabamiro offered advice to couples facing difficulties, urging them to seek professional counseling and emphasizing the importance of communication, empathy, and understanding in maintaining strong relationships. He noted that “truth, honesty, and fidelity are fundamental to building a healthy marriage.”
Onabamiro also cautioned students against neglecting their studies and seeking shortcuts to success, saying, “You are counseled today not to choose comfort during the age of labour, lest you labour during the age of comfort.”
The Vice-Chancellor of Tai Solarin University of Education, Prof. Oluwole Banjo, commended Onabamiro for his contributions to counseling psychology and the university’s development. The event was attended by prominent figures, including former Ogun State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, and a one-time Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Victor Olusegun Awonusi. Traditional rulers, clergymen, professional colleagues, and others also attended the event.
The inaugural lecture was part of the university’s efforts to promote academic excellence and provide a platform for scholars to share their expertise. Onabamiro’s lecture highlighted the importance of adopting a modest and resourceful lifestyle in the face of economic challenges and the need for the government to prioritize mental health services.
