Men from the Oyo State Fire Service have reportedly been attacked by some inhabitants of Sabo market in Orile Igbon, which is located along the Ogbomoso-Ilorin motorway in Oyo State.
When the firefighters attempted to stop them from unlawfully removing petroleum from an overturned oil tanker, ZINGTIE learnt that they were attacked.
Sources claim that the event happened on Wednesday night.
According to information obtained, a tyre blowout caused the tanker carrying 33,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) to capsize, resulting in a fuel leak that sparked a fire.
According to our correspondent, firefighters from the Ogbomoso branch of the Oyo State Fire Service were notified of the event.
The residents allegedly fought the firefighters after they arrived on the scene.
On Thursday, Mr. Yemi Akinyinka, the general manager of the Oyo State Fire Service, gave ZINGTIE confirmation of the event.
He pointed out that the event happened in front of the local Divisional Police Officer, or DPO.
The event was embarrassing, he said.
“It was in the presence of the DPO of the area that the whole scenario happened. And there is nothing we can do than to turn back.
“And when the thing got out of hand, they called us but I cannot send my men to the scene again.
“They want to scoop fuel. They saw our vehicles. We tried all we could but they sent us back. What do they want to work on? It was an embarrassing situation”.
