Two instances of the fatal Mpox illness have been confirmed in the state by the Rivers State Government.

Dr. Adaeze Oreh, the Commissioner for Health, revealed this information on Tuesday during a press conference in Port Harcourt.

Oreh stated that in order to be ready for any catastrophes, the state had already placed its Public Health Emergency Operations Center on high alert.

“Recently, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control stated that there are 39 confirmed cases of Mpox across the country.

“Out of this number, Rivers State has two confirmed cases of Mpox.

“We have deployed our medical teams to respond to all emergencies at the healthcare level, general and specialist hospitals,” she said.

She said that the state government had organized resources to track down every instance of Mpox infections throughout the state and had implemented an incident plan for the disease.

She went on to say that in order to successfully monitor and battle the virus, the ministry has hired and educated ad hoc staff.

“The ad hoc staff now can respond to this infection at all levels of our healthcare pillar,” she said.

According to ZINGTIE, Mpox is an illness caused by the monkeypox virus that primarily spreads through close contact between individuals. On occasion, the disease can also spread from the environment to people through objects and surfaces that an infected person has touched.
