Savannah Energy, Nigeria, has awarded full scholarships to 50 university students from Akwa Ibom and Cross River states in south-south Nigeria. The scholarship, launched in 2023, covers all expenses, including school fees, accommodation, textbooks, and living costs, for the duration of their studies.

At the scholarship award ceremony on January 31 in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Pade Durotoye, Managing Director of Savannah Energy, Nigeria, emphasised the company’s commitment to investing in people. “We are determined to drive energy availability for Nigeria and invest in people,” he said. “We believe there are people with excellent minds who have been deprived of opportunities.”.

The beneficiaries were selected from 1,481 applications through a rigorous, transparent, and merit-based screening process. “These students underwent a computer-based test and an interview session, led by university professors,” explained Nkoyo Etuk, Head of Stakeholder Relations and Regional Manager, South East, Savannah Energy, Nigeria.

The scholarship program is part of Savannah Energy’s sustainability strategy, which focuses on promoting socio-economic prosperity in its host countries. “Education is an important part of our strategy, aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4—Quality Education,” said Mrs. Etuk.

Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State, represented by Idongesit Etiebet, thanked Savannah Energy for giving back to society through the scholarship program. The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Uyo, Nyaudoh Ndaeyo, also expressed gratitude, saying, “You have taken the burden off these students; there won’t be any fee drive for these ones.”.

Professor Ndaeyo, who was represented at the event by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academics, Anthonia Essien, further stated, “There are many brilliant students out there who don’t have the opportunity to go to school. We are grateful to Savannah Energy for this gesture.”.

The scholarship beneficiaries, who are studying various courses, including medicine and surgery, medical laboratory science, dental surgery, nursing science, human nutrition and dietetics, and genetics and biotechnology, were overwhelmed with joy.

One of the beneficiaries, who preferred anonymity, said, “I am so grateful to Savannah Energy for this scholarship. It’s a huge burden off my shoulders, and I can now focus on my studies.”.

Another beneficiary who is studying medicine said, “This scholarship is a dream come true. I was worried about how I would pay my fees, but now I can concentrate on becoming a doctor.”.

The SEE-IT programme, which was launched in 2023, is designed to support the education and development of young people in Akwa Ibom and Cross River states. In addition to the scholarship programme, the company also provides training and mentorship to the beneficiaries.

Mrs. Etuk said, “We are committed to supporting the development of our host communities, and we believe that education is key to unlocking the potential of young people.”.

The event was attended by dignitaries, including the Commissioner for Education in Akwa Ibom State, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Uyo, and representatives of Savannah Energy.

In his closing remarks, Mr. Durotoye said, “We are proud to be supporting the education and development of young people in Akwa Ibom and Cross River states. We believe that this investment will yield positive returns for the communities and for Nigeria as a whole.”
