Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems and a Grammy-winning Nigerian singer, was among the distinguished honourees at the first-ever Billboard Global Power Players event, held on Wednesday at Shoreditch House in East London, England.

She was recognized alongside British music icon Sir Elton John and Ghazi Shami, founder and CEO of EMPIRE.

Tems was presented with the Diamond Award by Nkosiyati Khumalo, who was recently appointed as the editor of Billboard Africa.

“Being African and a musician is a whole new world and I feel like Billboard has been so supportive of not just African music but the whole scene and the culture.

“This has been a really great honor, especially given that that African music is moving to heights that has never been seen before, and Billboard is one of the key players in moving that needle forward,” the Oscar-nominated star stated in her acceptance speech.

Sir Elton John received the Creators’ Champion Award, while EMPIRE’s Ghazi Shami was honored with the prestigious Clive Davis Visionary Award. Nigerian rapper and YBNL founder Olamide had the honour of presenting Shami with his award.

The event also marked the debut of Billboard’s U.K. Power Players chart.

Tems holds the record as the most-awarded African artist in Billboard history. In 2023, she made history as the first Nigerian female artist to be celebrated at Billboard’s Women in Music event.
