After what appears to have been an acid assault outside a school in west London, two teens are in the hospital; one of the victims may have permanent disabilities.
A corrosive substance was thrown at students and a staff member on Monday afternoon close to Westminster Academy.
A 14-year-old girl has been admitted to the hospital with injuries that “may potentially be life-changing,” according to police. Although his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening, a 16-year-old boy who was also hurt in the attack is receiving medical attention in a hospital.
Since then, the third victim—a 27-year-old woman—has been released from the hospital due to non-life-threatening injuries.
“Tests of the substance are ongoing. At this stage officers believe it to be acidic.” according to a statement from London police. Officers think it’s acidic at this point. “Urgent enquiries” are being conducted by authorities to identify and arrest those responsible for the attack.
Westminster Academy’s principal, Numera Anwar, expressed worry for the victims and the community, calling the occurrence a “distressing incident” involving what looked to be a “corrosive substance that was acid-like.”
She attested to the fact that the incident took place outside the school while personnel and kids were finishing up for the day.
“The school was closed Tuesday to allow for a thorough investigation and to ensure the school can resume normally from tomorrow with all safety measures in place,” Anwar added.
The incident fits with a concerning pattern in the UK, where the use of corrosive materials in attacks increased sharply in the last few years, only to rise again in 2022.
Teenage violence, including shootings and knife crimes, has increased, especially in London. A 15-year-old boy was discovered shot to death in a park close to the location of Monday’s event in July.
Adam Hug, the leader of Westminster City Council, called the attack “truly shocking” and promised to collaborate with law enforcement to assist the impacted community and school.
Though their conditions were not life-threatening, two police officers who arrived to the scene were also sent to the hospital as a precaution after feeling ill.
Several crime scenes have been set up by the police as part of the investigation.
