The University of Port Harcourt is set to confer degrees on 14,861 graduands during its 35th convocation ceremony, scheduled to hold on Saturday. The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Owunari Georgewill, disclosed that 363 students would receive first-class honors in the undergraduate category.

According to Georgewill, the convocation ceremony would feature the conferment of degrees, higher degrees, diplomas, prizes, and related ceremonies from July 21 to July 26. He highlighted the university’s progress in infrastructural development, academic programming, global visibility, research collaborations, and challenges.
The university has recorded considerable development through support from the Federal Government, TETFund, and Capital Projects initiatives, which have led to the renovation of existing structures, construction of new office buildings, and upgrading of learning environments. “UNIPORT can now boast of the best laboratories, sports complex, fully equipped health facilities, a counselling centre, entrepreneurial centre, and world-class Convocation Arena, all aimed at producing a well-rounded graduate,” Georgewill said.

The Vice-Chancellor also announced the establishment of three new faculties: the Faculty of Computing, the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, and the Faculty of Media and Communications. He highlighted the university’s renewable energy drive, stating that the construction of a 10.7MW solar hybrid power plant under the UNIPORT Solar Farm programme would provide steady electricity to the university and surrounding communities. “This marks a significant milestone in our renewable energy drive and journey towards sustainability and energy independence,” he added.
Four distinguished Nigerians would receive honorary doctorate degrees during the convocation ceremony: the First Lady, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu; the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike; the Chairman of TETFund, Aminu Masari; and Gov. Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa.
