Jake, an American, and Blessing, a Nigerian, talked candidly about their unique path to marriage, which defied family opposition and cultural norms.

The couple discussed how they overcame challenges with unflinching faith to get married in Nigeria without any family members present in an appearance on Femi Lazarus’s YouTube show, Stories, on Sunday.

Living under her stepmother’s tight and brutal supervision during her early years caused Blessing to experience a lot of trauma.

She characterised her childhood as a period of repression and terror.

“I grew up in a very strict environment,” she said.

“My dad does not smile; he does not say, ‘How are you?’ If he’s coming back from work, we would pretend to be asleep because your presence alone would get you in trouble.”

When Blessing was five years old, she described a particularly painful event in which her stepmother violently beat her, throwing her into unconsciousness for three days.

“She beat me and hit my head against the wall… when I woke up, I was in the hospital on oxygen,” she recalled.
