The confrontation between Junta states and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) may have just intensified. As a result of the back and forth between the two parties, thousands of deaths are reportedly recorded; Burkina Faso holds ECOWAS responsible. This has led to a grievance, which military commander Capitaine Ibrahim TRAORÉ elaborated on in a speech.
The ECOWAS regional union and the Junta states of West Africa—Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso—have conflicted and have periodically spat barbs. Although these nations have been subject to economic sanctions by ECOWAS, Burkina Faso and other Junta governments have chosen to leave the regional organization.
But in light of recent comments made by Capitaine Ibrahim TRAORÉ, the head of the Junta of Burkina Faso, in a speech, the acts of ECOWAS have had disastrous consequences.
The head of Burkina Faso’s Junta, Capitaine Ibrahim TRAORÉ, said in a tweet that Nigeria’s president, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and ECOWAS were to blame for the deaths of thousands of Nigériens. Traoré is a journalist.
The ECOWAS sanctions against the Nigeran people have resulted in thousands of deaths, Capitaine Ibrahim TRAORÉ said during his speech. The Nigérien people’s spirit of resistance has not, he noted, been diminished by this.
“Do you think there are weak men who are in Niger ? There are fighters over there. The Nigérien army is warlike. They have been fighting for years. It’s not an army of parade or a peacekeeping army. And the armies of the AES decided to unite,” Capitaine Ibrahim TRAORÉ said.
In addition, he stated that they are ready to confront the ECOWAS forces, which were reportedly on standby.
“We are waiting for that standby force (ECOWAS). Thousands of Nigériens died on their hospital beds because of a lack of electricity or lack of medicine. It is a crime! They are responsible for these sanctions, they are responsible for these deaths.”
