The former First Lady of Ondo State, Betty Akeredolu, has come under heavy fire for her recent social media comments in which she called Nigeria “a zoo country that is beyond redemption.”
Following her husband Rotimi Akeredolu’s death in office on December 27, 2023, this declaration has generated a contentious internet discussion about the status of the country.
Mrs. Akeredolu made a parallel between the recent U.S. elections and the 2023 Nigerian presidential election in a tweet on the website that was formerly known as Twitter. Even though 25 million ballots were cast in Nigeria over five days, she said, “When dishonesty is prioritised, simple things become difficult,” raising doubts about the voting process’s integrity.
Her comments were meant to draw attention to alleged electoral flaws and cast doubt on the nation’s leadership.
However, the public’s response to her parallel was swiftly conflicted. One comment from a user named Paulexy struck a chord with her; he was depressed about the nation and said, “Truth is bitter, yes. I can comprehend the assaults on her. This country, Nigeria, is doomed.”
Mrs. Akeredolu said that the situation was “very bitter indeed” and reiterated her previous stance by calling Nigeria a “zoo.” She also enquired who would step in to save the country.
