Leaders of the European Union have pledged to respond if US President Donald Trump enacts tariffs, emphasizing that there would be no winners in a trade war with the United States.
The EU leaders made this statement on Monday during a meeting in Brussels.
At the meeting, French President Emmanuel Macron emphasized that the European Union must assert itself if President Trump follows through with his threat to impose tariffs on the bloc.
“If we are attacked in terms of trade, Europe as a true power will have to stand up for itself,” Macron stated.
The leaders of the EU’s 27 member states were gathered in the Belgian capital, alongside Britain’s prime minister and the head of NATO, to discuss boosting Europe’s defenses in response to a more aggressive Russia while Trump continues to demand that American allies contribute more to defense spending.
However, the focus shifted to Trump’s decision to impose tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China, with the US president threatening to target the EU next.
Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk, whose country is currently holding the EU presidency, warned against a senseless and unnecessary trade war.
Trump has openly criticized the EU, claiming it treats the United States “very, very unfairly” in terms of trade.
After imposing tariffs on North American neighbors and China, Trump stated on Sunday that he plans to focus on the EU next.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz pointed out that a trade dispute would harm both the US and Europe, noting that transatlantic cooperation is preferable for both sides.
“We can also react,” he added, departing from Germany’s usual cautious stance on trade with the US.
“We need America, and America needs us as well,” said the EU’s top diplomat, Kaja Kallas, highlighting that there are “no winners in trade wars.”
The European Commission also made it clear on Sunday that it would respond firmly if Trump targeted the EU and criticized his broad tariffs against Canada, Mexico, and China.
“Tariffs create unnecessary economic disruption and drive inflation. They are hurtful to all sides,” a commission spokesperson remarked.
Until that point, Brussels had hoped to resolve trade tensions with Trump through negotiation.
