The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, or EFCC, has refuted rumours that it is holding former Kogi State governor Yahaya Bello.

Recall that on Wednesday, Ohiare Michael, the director of the Yahaya Bello Media Office, declared that he had accepted the anti-graft agency’s invitation.

The statement claims that prominent Nigerians escorted the former governor to the EFCC headquarters.

However, the anti-graft agency stated that Bello was still wanted and had an active arrest warrant in a statement sent by Dele Oyewale, a spokesperson.

“Media reports today that a former Governor of Kogi State, Mr. Yahaya Bello is in the holding facility of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, is incorrect. The Commission wishes to state that Bello is not in its custody.

“Bello, already declared wanted by the Commission for alleged N80.2 billion money laundering charges, remains wanted with a subsisting warrant for his arrest,” he said in a statement on Wednesday.

Bello was listed as sought by the Commission following several unsuccessful attempts to get him arrested on suspicion of laundering N80 billion in cash.
