Eleven individuals lost their lives during violent encounters in a suburb of Damascus, according to a Wednesday report from Syria’s state-run SANA news agency, which stated that armed militants targeted both civilians and government forces.

The report noted that from late Tuesday, fighters had opened fire on both civilian and law enforcement vehicles on the roads. Additionally, other attackers launched an assault on a checkpoint located in the city of Sahnaya, situated to the south of Damascus.

Locals told dpa that the use of automatic weapons and rocket-propelled grenades caused significant damage to houses and vehicles, instilling fear among many residents.

According to one local, security units pushed toward the center of Sahnaya under intense gunfire to reach districts primarily inhabited by Druze citizens.

The fighting in Sahnaya followed unrest the previous day in Jaramana, another town near the capital, which was reportedly triggered by an audio clip featuring remarks seen as offensive toward the Muslim prophet Mohammed.

The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that at least 17 people were killed during the incidents in Jaramana.

The voice in the audio recording was said to be that of a Druze individual, prompting violent confrontations between members of the Druze community and other factions.

On Tuesday, the Interior Ministry stated that investigations were ongoing to determine the identity of the speaker in the controversial recording.

A public declaration issued by the Druze community in Jaramana claimed the audio was faked with the intention of causing conflict.

Following the removal of long-time president Bashar al-Assad in December, Syria’s new Islamist-led administration pledged national unity and inclusion. However, deadly confrontations have continued to erupt.

In March, fighting broke out in Syria’s western coastal areas between the nation’s current security forces and armed groups still loyal to al-Assad.
