In what his mother calls an act of bravery, an 11-year-old kid was dismissed from school for stealing a classmate’s gun and dismantling it.
His mother is furious over the expulsion and maintains that her son should be viewed as a hero rather than a criminal.
The case started at Lansing, Michigan’s Dwight Rich School in May. According to reports, the child stopped a disaster when he saw another pupil inside the school brandishing a gun. The seventh-grader allegedly disarmed the classmate, disassembled the firearm, and dumped the ammunition using hunting techniques.
But under Michigan’s stringent school gun regulations, the child was dismissed after school officials discovered he had handled the firearm.
“He’s 11 years old. Seventh grade. Never been in trouble before,” his mom, Savitra McClurkin, told NBC affiliate WILX.
McClurkin claimed that her kid was behaving as though he was assisting out of concern for the safety of his peers.
“It’s devastating because he’s a bright kid and all he wants to do is be a kid,” she added.
The mother acknowledged that her son was afraid and did not want to get the other boy into trouble, which is why he did not immediately tell adults.
“He didn’t want to implicate himself in it, nor did he want to tell on the person that actually brought the firearm,” she said.
Police confirmed in May that a 12-year-old child had been apprehended after a dismantled and unloaded handgun was found at the school. His identity is still unknown.
Following weeks of the district’s silence, McClurkin has since shown up at a Lansing School Board meeting and demanded answers.
“I’m frustrated. I’m at my wits’ end. I don’t know what to do,” she told WILX.
According to a family friend-created GoFundMe, the boy’s “first instinct was not to run away, it was to protect his classmates.”
“Instead of being recognized as a hero, [he] is now being treated like a criminal,” the page states. The fundraising goes on to say that McClurkin has had to educate her son due to the abrupt expulsion, which has put a burden on her finances when she reduced her work hours.
“On what could have been a tragic and devastating day … [he] acted out of courage and compassion,” According to the GoFundMe states.
Officials from the Lansing School District, however, claim that the choice was inevitable.
Administrators noted in a statement: “After a thorough investigation, and in accordance with Michigan law regarding dangerous weapons on school property, the Lansing School District determined that expulsion was necessary.”
They emphasized that the case comprised “statements and video evidence” and said “expulsion is never a decision the district takes lightly.”
“The Lansing School District has both a legal and moral responsibility to ensure the safety of all students and staff,” the statement continued.
However, McClurkin claims her kid has been cut off from his education because he is not allowed to use any educational platforms. Citing the district’s decision, she said that even online institutions have turned him away.
“They are setting my child up for failure,” she said. “They’re setting him up to being a statistic, and I’ve been doing everything in my will and my power to keep him from that.”
While his family works to have him reinstated, the youngster is currently still enrolled in an online program that is not accredited.
