A flood devastated a plantain plantation in Enohia Itim, Afikpo Local Government Area, Ebonyi State, destroying over 800 farmlands and leaving at least 12 reported dead.

After confirming the tragedy, Engr. Timothy Nwachi, the Chairman of the Afikpo Local Government Area, comforted the families of the deceased and promised that the local government will take all reasonable steps to ensure that it doesn’t happen again.

He advised people who were still residing in flood-prone areas to go to safer ground, noting that authorities have warned that the ongoing rains could result in more floods.

“We express sadness over the unfortunate incident and use this medium to extend our condolences to the families that lost their loved ones.

As government, we will support and pledge to collaborate with relevant state and federal agencies to provide humanitarian assistance and timely relief to those affected,” he stated.

The event took place on Friday, August 1, 2025, and was caused by heavy rains that caused flooding and extensive damage.

Hon. Francis Abani Okpani, the councillor for Itim Ward in the Afikpo Legislative Council, confirmed the tragedy as well. He revealed that, of the twelve individuals who perished in the flood, three remains have been found and nine are still unaccounted for.

He added that there were three children among the dead.

“The Federal Ministry of Environment had predicted that Afikpo is one of the areas in Nigeria likely to experience flooding. I had earlier implored the people of Afikpo to incorporate climate change projections into flood risk management plans,” he said.

In order to avoid obstructions, he also advised locals to maintain efficient drainage systems and to keep their rivers and drains free of debris.
