Flood destroys houses, farmlands in Nasarawa communities

As the flood inundated Loko, which borders the River Benue in Nasarawa local government area, and Bassa, which borders Kokona local government area of the state, homes and farmlands were damaged in Nasarawa villages.

Ben Akwash, the executive secretary of the Nasarawa State Emergency Management Agency, or NASEMA, revealed this to reporters in the state capital of Lafia on Monday.

Although the exact amount of damage has not yet been determined, Akwash revealed that the flood destroyed all of the crops and left nothing to rebuild. He also expressed sadness that NIMET was not able to forecast the catastrophe at Bassa.

However, the head of NASEMA pointed out that in order to make sure that people are relocated upland before the upcoming flood occurs, active sensitization is presently taking place throughout all of the flood-prone towns.

“We are working hand in hand with community leaders, local chiefs and youth groups to talk to some locals who remain adamant despite repeated warnings and appeal to move to uplands ahead of the flood.

“We have held several sensitisation meetings with all the communities prone to flooding and agreed with village heads and traditional rulers to persuade the locals who may want to see the flood coming before they move to kindly plead with them because we have provided safe havens in all the flood-prone communities in the event of a flood,” he said.

Akwash also alluded to the fact that Governor Abdullahi Sule, out of his enthusiasm and concern for the people who would be impacted, had enough relief supplies on hand in case of emergencies. He urged communities that are vulnerable to flooding to act proactively by relocating to uplands now that the rainfall is increasing, in accordance with the federal government’s warnings.
