As part of an odd internet challenge, 14-year-old Davi Nunes Moreira injected himself with water and butterfly remnants, resulting in his claimed death.
When Moreira’s health abruptly declined and he started throwing up, he was admitted to a hospital in Planalto, Brazil.
After developing a limp, Moreira initially told his father that he had injured himself while playing, according to Mail Online. As his health deteriorated, however, he told medical professionals that he visited a pharmacist, mixed a dead butterfly with water, and then injected the mixture into his leg.
According to reports, Davi’s death may have been caused by toxins in the mixture, which led his body to shut down and enter septic shock.
Police have opened an inquiry into the claims and whether they were part of a strange online challenge, and they are currently awaiting the full post-mortem results.
Last Wednesday, Davi passed away in a hospital in the state of Bahia, which is in northeastern Brazil.
The investigation into Davi’s death is being led by the Vitoria da Conquista Civil Police.
A spokesman for the force said: “The autopsy results will help clarify the cause of death.”
“The investigation is designed to clear up what happened.”
According to local accounts, Davi’s father was cleaning the house when he discovered the syringe his son used to inject himself under his pillow.
“Butterflies have a complex biology, and the fluids present in their bodies have not been studied in depth in terms of their toxicity to humans,” stated Professor Marcelo Duarte, a specialist in butterflies and the director of Sao Paulo University’s Zoology Museum.
