The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has disclosed that an estimated 14 million Nigerians are involved in or addicted to harmful drug consumption.

Mrs. Yetunde Joyifous, the Deputy Commander of the Ondo State Command of NDLEA, revealed this at a drug abuse awareness event hosted by the Oijefon Youth Council for secondary schools in Ile Oluji/Oke-Igbo Local Government Area of Ondo State on Wednesday.

Joyifous stated that most of the drugs consumed are chemical substances that negatively affect users’ minds. She emphasized that the key to combating this issue is engaging community stakeholders and encouraging collaboration with authorities to fight against the dangerous drug trade.

“I want to thank the Oijefon Youth Council for partnering with the NDLEA in the fight against drug abuse in society,” she noted.

She pointed out that younger individuals, particularly those in secondary school, are the most vulnerable to drug abuse, stressing the need for intensified efforts to protect them.

Adedokun Adeyonu, President of the Oijefon Youth Council, shared in his welcome speech that the programme was organized to discourage young people from turning to drugs.

“Drug abuse means using harmful substances like alcohol, tobacco, or illegal drugs in a way that harms the body and mind,” he noted.

Adeyonu further noted that many individuals begin using drugs due to curiosity, peer pressure, or an attempt to solve personal problems, often believing drugs to be a solution.

He also identified peer influence and exposure to certain films and music as factors contributing to the rise in drug abuse among youths. He urged society to work together to create a bright future for the younger generation.
