Residents report that no fewer than 17 people were killed in an attack on the Mbalom community in Gwer East Local Government Area of Benue State on Easter Sunday.
The most recent event contributes to the ongoing security difficulties in certain areas of Benue, where rural communities have endured multiple assaults by suspected armed groups.
According to residents, the assailants burst into the neighborhood, murdered multiple individuals, and ignited houses.
At least 17 corpses have been found, but many others are still unaccounted for as locals scour the nearby bushes for additional victims.
During the assault, several homes and properties were destroyed, displacing survivors.
A resident of the area, who wished to remain unnamed, stated: “This is heartbreaking. People were caught unawares. Many are still missing.”
At the time of this report, multiple calls to DSP Udeme Edet, the spokesperson for the Benue State Police Command, went unanswered as attempts were made to verify the unfortunate event.
