Mr. Cletus Obun, the pro-chancellor of the Federal College of Education in Ididep, Ibiono LGA, Akwa Ibom State, has pointed out that the majority of the coalition’s important figures in the African Democratic Congress (ADC) are not trustworthy.

Obun, a pillar of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC in Cross River State, questioned the legitimacy of several important figures in an interview, including Atiku Abubakar, Boss Mustapha, and former Kaduna State Governor El Rufai.

He insisted that the ADC Coalition is a group of power-hungry individuals seeking to reclaim their political prominence, pointing out that these politicians had previously abandoned their political pursuits.

According to Obun, the ADC Coalition lacks the traction and stability required to significantly alter the political environment.

“We are not dealing with anything new. Check every person who is prominent in that coalition; they have all held one position or the other in the last 24 years. So, we have something to judge them by. Their records speak for themselves.”

The former chairman of the state’s now-defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) voiced doubts about the coalition’s ability to take on the APC.

Despite its lack of substance, he said it was “good for political optics.”

However, Obun acknowledged that the ADC Coalition is “too diluted” to be effective and that the APC requires a robust and adamant opposition.

Given Nigeria’s complexity and sophistication, he also acknowledged that a one-party system is not feasible there.

“The coalition is due for political expression, but it won’t yield any tangible benefits, either to the individuals or to Nigeria.

“What we are seeing is a congregation of power mongers simply seeking how to become relevant again, reinvent themselves, and rewrite their own history,” Obun said.

He said, “Nigerians are too politically conscious and enlightened to be eroded into a one-party system. A weak opposition drifts you into complacency and underperformance. You need opposition to perform.”
