In Borno State, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has stated that it will run against the All Progressives Congress (APC), which is currently in power, and will back any candidate the party nominates for the general elections in 2027.

This was revealed on Thursday at the party’s formal debut in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, by Sheriff Banki, the state’s party coordinator.

Banki charged that the APC was using “every possible means” to silence any opposition voices in the state. He said that going forward, the ADC would be a strong opposition that actively examines government policies and opposes any measures that it believes to be anti-democratic.

“Because of the crises facing major opposition parties in the country, which are perpetuated by the APC administration, we have decided to enter a national coalition movement—one we believe cannot be hijacked or controlled by the ruling party,” he said.

He claims that there isn’t a viable opposition in Borno State right now. But that story is about to alter with the ADC’s arrival.

“Borno is in dire need of opposition parties. As far as we are concerned, there is no real opposition in the state. But starting from today, with the unveiling of this ADC, there will be tough opposition capable of holding the government to account,” he said.

In order to make sure Borno is not left behind in the campaign, Banki said the state chapter had joined the larger national coalition under the ADC banner. He designated Kashim Imam as the coalition’s torchbearer in Borno and Atiku Abubakar as its leader in the Northeast.

Regarding the party’s 2027 election plan, he stated that all members, even those from other political movements, would support the party’s presidential candidate.

“The ADC will offer a credible platform for individuals with progressive ideas who want to develop Nigeria. We believe we can win. What has always stopped us in Borno is manipulation—both internal and external. But with commitment and courage, we can challenge and overcome these obstacles,” he added.

Banki further disclosed that a number of well-known politicians, including past NNPP candidates for governor, a former PDP treasurer, former members of the House of Assembly, and former party officials, have joined the party in Borno.
