Dele Momodu, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, has asserted that an opposition coalition including Atiku Abubakar and a southern politician could possibly oust President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general election.

He argued that a coalition ticket featuring Atiku and a prominent southern politician, like Peter Obi or Rotimi Amaechi, could significantly reduce the ruling party’s chances in the upcoming election.

“I am convinced that if we have a partnership with Atiku, possibly with Peter Obi, perhaps with Rotimi Amaechi, or any other individual from the South, Tinubu will be finished.

“This would mark the end of Tinubu’s foundation, not the APC,” Momodu expressed during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics.

He stated that Atiku’s long-standing political ambitions and experience make him a strong candidate if he were to be the opposition’s nominee.

“Based on my assessment, Atiku Abubakar – even among those who previously opposed him – is now being viewed favorably, as the enemy of your enemy is your friend.

“He has been preparing for this moment for a long time, similar to how Donald Trump was preparing for his presidency. Critics claimed Donald Trump was too old, yet he is now in his second term, which is quite ironic.

“I firmly believe that opposition politics is essential; there must be opposition candidates. However, Tinubu seems intent on running against himself, which I find illogical,” Momodu remarked.

Momodu replied to the question about whether he thinks Atiku has what it takes to beat Tinubu in 2027 by stating that the former vice president’s political structure and resolve render him a tough rival.

He pointed out that the growing tendency of members to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) since Tinubu assumed office represents a serious danger to Nigeria’s democracy.

Momodu described this situation as “a tragic day for democracy,” warning that it could be dangerous if the PDP is reduced to only a handful of governors.

During the 2023 elections, Atiku, Obi, and Amaechi were associated with different political parties. However, they have now come together to contest against the ruling APC in the upcoming 2027 general elections.
