2027 elections: No governor can deliver North to APC – Umar Ardo

Dr. Umar Ardo, a former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Adamawa State, has stated that no governor can guarantee victory for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in northern Nigeria, despite recent defections to the ruling party.

During an interview with TRUST TV, Ardo stated that the assumption that governors can deliver the North to the APC in a presidential race is false and does not reflect the region’s political realities.

“I am from northern Nigeria and I know the terrain very well,” Ardo said.

“There is no way any governor can deliver the North to the APC in a presidential election.”

He noted that voters in the region are generally independent and are not easily swayed by political leaders’ actions.

According to him, grassroots voters base their decisions on personal convictions rather than the party affiliation of their governors.

Ardo urged the ruling party against relying too much on governors and political defections as a means of winning elections.

He stated that history has demonstrated that political power in the North does not always flow with elected officials.

He warned that focusing on elite politics while disregarding regular people’s interests and concerns could boomerang on the APC, particularly in future presidential elections.

“Forget about the presidency, the APC bringing all governors, you know, into the APC. Where will any governor, especially me who comes from northern Nigeria? I can guarantee you, there is no way that any governor will deliver the APC in northern Nigeria not anywhere. But if they say they will see road,” he said.
