Political actors have started joining the African Democratic Congress (ADC) since the coalition of opposition leaders decided to run against President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election using the ADC as their official platform.
ADC was adopted on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, according to ZINGTIE. The coalition was led by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Senate President David Mark, 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, former Governors Rotimi Amaechi and Nasir El-rufai of Rivers and Kaduna States, as well as prominent figures from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party, and Social Democratic Party (SDP).
The coalition aims to unseat President Tinubu in 2027 and includes some resentful members of the All Progressives Congress, such as former APC National Chairman John Oyegun, former Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi, former Attorney General and Justice Minister Abubakar Malami, and former Interior Minister Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola.
According to ZINGTIE, the rise of ADC restored optimism and the powerful voice of alternative political groups.
Aregbesola became the ADC’s Interim National Secretary, while David Mark became the party’s Interim National Chairman.
As opposition figures and the ruling party vie for his support, Rabiu Kwankwaso, the leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement and the New Nigerian Peoples Party’s (NNPP) 2023 presidential candidate, is currently the focus of political interest in the nation.
Key opposition figures from the northern area are presently putting pressure on Kwankwaso to join the movement, a NNPP source told ZINGTIE on Sunday.
Kwankwaso has a sizable following spread over the North, according to ZINGTIE.
“Kwankwaso is being pressured to join the coalition. Of course, Tinubu’s men are also in talks with him but as we all know, people no longer want to associate with this government.
“I can tell you that as it is right now, our leader in the person of Kwankwaso is yet to make a decision on whether to join the coalition movement or the ruling party.
“However, his weight is more on the coalition because like I said, APC is not a party to reckon with.
“I believe that as we progress, especially as the electioneering season draws closer, everything will be made clear soon.
“Kwankwaso is currently the new bride and the reason is because Kano State is one of the states that produces the largest number of votes in the country.
“So, both the APC and the opposition people understand that if they are able to capture Kwankwaso, they have captured Kano State.
“I can tell you for free that Kwankwaso controls the entire political structure in the state”, he said.
In an interview with ZINGTIE, Hashimu Dungurawa, the NNPP’s Kano State Chairman, stated that they are prepared to follow their leader wherever he goes.
“We are his blind followers, wherever he is taking us, we will follow him, we don’t have a problem”, Hashimu told ZINGTIE.
Politicians from all walks of life have flocked to join the party since it was approved by the coalition of opposition leaders on Wednesday.
Over the weekend, ZINGTIE learned that at least five current governors who were elected under the PDP’s auspices have agreed to join the party.
Sources claim that some APC governors, especially those in the north, are secretly supporting opposition leaders who are attempting to depose President Tinubu in 2027.
At least 100 political actors in Zamfara State have joined ADC, according to Kabiru Garba, the organization’s chairman.
Garba also revealed that Dauda Lawal, the state governor, has been invited to join the movement and is anticipated to do so.
In the meantime, other PDP leaders and angry APC members from Benue, Niger, Kano, Gombe, Borno, and Yobe states have joined the ADC.
In a July 2, 2025, letter to the PDP chairman in Mbabur Council Ward, Gwer LGA of Benue State, former Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice Alex Adum stated that he was quitting the party in order to “rescue Nigeria,” according to ZINGTIE.
Adum, who joined the PDP in 1998, acknowledged that “as a loyal party man, I do not wish my new partisan endeavours to conflict with that of the PDP since the party leadership has elected not to formally join the National Coalition Movement.”
Similarly, in a letter to the chairman of Edikwu Ward 2 in Apa LGA, Olofu Samuel, a former Benue commissioner who had been a part of the most recent administration, also announced his resignation.
Ibrahim Amin, a Kano State PDP chieftain, also quit the party, claiming ongoing internal strife and a lack of unity within the party.
Additionally, Mohammed Mukhtar, a party leader, stated in a letter dated July 3, 2025, to the chairman of the PDP ward in Suleja, Niger State, that his choice was the result of “deep personal reflection and consultations with associates.”
Mukhtar Adam, another Kano PDP leader, also left the party on Thursday to join the ADC.
He mentioned “persistent internal crises at both the national and state levels” in his letter to the head of the Tundun Wada Ward.
On Thursday, Air Vice Marshal Shehu Adamu (retd), the PDP’s 2023 candidate for governor of Gombe State, announced his resignation from the party.
Babagana Yakubu Mohammed, Yobe State’s Senior Special Assistant to Governor Mai Mala Buni, resigned from the APC on Sunday and joined the ADC.
Former Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom’s Senior Special Assistant on Media, Jimin Geoffrey, informed the ZINGTIE that he is also thinking of joining ADC.
Given the aspirations of several of the party’s prominent political personalities to lead the party in the 2027 election, there are compelling signs that the alliance will undoubtedly fall apart.
Supporters of Peter Obi think the former governor of Anambra should be handed the presidential ticket, despite Atiku’s adamant preparations for a second run.
Some political observers believe that Peter Obi or Rotimi Amaechi should fly the ADC banner on the 2027 presidential ticket, which should be zoned to the south.
Some northern party members, however, are planning to nominate Atiku as the ADC presidential candidate and Peter Obi as his running mate.
However, Obidient Movement National Coordinator Yunusa Tanko stated in an interview with ZINGTIE reporter on Sunday that Peter Obi cannot be anyone’s running mate.
“All we have been saying is that wherever Peter Obi goes, we will follow him but we have also made our points clear that Obi is going to be the flag bearer of any party he joins.
“We are not considering any other options besides Obi becoming a presidential candidate for the 2027 election in whichever party he joins and we are asking every Nigerian to do so”, he said.
