2027: Obasanjo, IBB hold close-door meeting ahead presidential election

General Ibrahim Babangida, the former military president, hosted Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, the former head of state and civilian president, at his hilltop mansion in Minna, the capital of Niger State.

Political chess masters are not oblivious to the nature of the visit, and they have begun speculating that it may be linked to the 2027 presidential general election.

Obasanjo, after arriving at the Ahmed Bola Tinubu International Airport in Minna, was welcomed by protocol officials from the Niger State Government House and then went straight to the residence of the elder statesman.

Obasanjo returned to the airport after a closed-door meeting between the two former leaders that lasted around 30 minutes.

According to one of the sources, the visit might be related to national matters and the approaching 2027 general elections, which are already gaining traction.

Obasanjo has recently garnered media attention due to reports associating him with political calculations intended to establish a joint ticket of Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as the presidential and vice-presidential candidates of the coalition-led African Democratic Congress (ADC).

As reported, the proposed ticket aims first to contest against former Vice President Atiku Abubakar for the party’s presidential nomination and, if victorious, to launch a wider opposition challenge against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election campaign in 2027.

In addition, the reports proposed that the arrangement, purportedly led by Obasanjo, encompasses a backup plan for Obi and Kwankwaso to run on a different platform if they do not obtain the ADC ticket.

It was further noted that Babangida had urged Kwankwaso to switch from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the ADC, with observers characterizing this as a component of a broader political strategy.

Neither Obasanjo nor Babangida has made any formal statements regarding the speculations thus far.

Nonetheless, political circles have interpreted their meeting on Monday as a further step toward advancing these permutations.
