Despite continuing internal conflicts, the Peoples Democratic Party’s Senate Caucus has stated that the party is prepared to lead a broad-based political coalition in the run-up to the general elections in 2027.
It emphasized that despite ongoing internal strife, the PDP will rise once more and come out stronger.
Under the direction of Senate Minority Leader Comrade Abba Moro, the caucus made this announcement at a press conference on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, at the National Assembly.
Speaking to journalists, Moro emphasized that the internal strife within the PDP is not unique to the party, pointing out that other political parties are also dealing with internal problems, such as the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Labour Party (LP), New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), and Social Democratic Party (SDP).
“The Senate Caucus of the PDP assures its members and supporters that contrary to insinuations that the party is in shreds and on the verge of collapse, the party will rise up again and wax stronger,” Moro said.
In addition to saying that the next events being organized by the party leadership would give the party new vitality and direction and establish the PDP as a formidable force in approaching elections, he asked PDP members around the country to continue to be unwavering in their devotion, allegiance, and commitment to the party.
The caucus emphasized that the country is dangerously moving toward a one-party system and warned against the growing temptation to celebrate the downfall of alternative parties.
“The beauty of democracy lies in the existence of robust opposition to keep the ruling party in check. The celebration of the emasculation of other parties does not advance the cause of democracy,” Moro stated.
The caucus also indicated that it was amenable to the notion of forming a political alliance, but it was adamant that the endeavor must be led by the party and not by personal goals.
Moro added that the PDP, is in a strong position to lead any such coalition if it becomes required because it is the biggest opposition party in the nation.
“The PDP’s umbrella is big enough to accommodate all persons desirous of a coalition. The PDP should drive the coalition, if and when it becomes necessary,” he added.
According to the caucus, which reaffirmed the party’s wide national support, the PDP is still a powerful political force in Nigeria and will overcome its issues with greater unity and strength.
“The PDP is a big brand. From the current conflicts will emerge a renewed and vibrant party capable of offering Nigerians a viable alternative,” Moro said.
