Sumner Sambo, Political Editor at Arise News, has cautioned opposition parties, including the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), that press statements alone will not be enough to unseat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Sambo made the remarks on Monday during Arise Television’s Morning Show while discussing political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He argued that opposition parties were not doing enough at the grassroots to persuade Nigerians that they were prepared to take power from the APC.

According to him, the ruling party has already begun campaigning, with President Bola Tinubu launching his re-election campaign in Kaduna, while opposition parties continue to release statements from Abuja.

“You can’t beat APC with press statements. You have to be proactive. You have to go to the grassroots,” Sambo said.

He noted that Nigerians want opposition parties to engage directly with people in their villages, wards and local government areas rather than limiting their activities to television appearances.

Sambo further stated that the ADC and NDC must demonstrate unity, build effective political structures and present a clear alternative to the ruling party if they hope to defeat Tinubu and the APC in 2027.

He warned that the APC could retain power with ease if its opponents continued to focus on press conferences without establishing a strong grassroots presence.

The Arise News editor urged opposition parties to take lessons from the APC’s approach, particularly its early mobilisation efforts and large campaign rallies.
