Emmanuel Ogidi, the Caretaker National Vice-Chairman (South-South) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has announced that the party is ramping up its efforts to restore internal unity and establish extensive political alliances in preparation for the 2027 general elections.

Ogidi stated in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that, despite current internal challenges, the PDP is dedicated to safeguarding Nigeria’s democracy and reestablishing itself as a strong opposition party.

He admitted that the party was facing some internal disagreements but maintained that these issues would not prevent it from achieving its larger goals of protecting democratic governance and restoring public confidence.

He claims that the PDP knows very well how serious the current political situation is and that it is committed to meeting the expectations of Nigerians who view the party as a stabilising influence in democracy.

“Yes, today we have some pockets of trouble in the PDP today, but we are resolute and we believe in God because we know that we are the only viable opposition.

“We are going to fight for that cause; we will do whatever it takes to ensure that we have democracy; if we do not have democracy, then we will have a banana republic.

“We understand this part, and because of that, we will not disappoint the people; we want to do whatever it takes and we are determined.

“We are going to reach out to anybody reachable in the other political parties, including the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

“We want to see what we can take away from these parties; else, this country will face more serious challenges,” he said.

Ogidi stated that the PDP would center its efforts in the run-up to the 2027 elections on safeguarding democracy, fostering national unity, and providing Nigerians with a credible option other than the current governing party.

He charged the APC with placing greater importance on winning elections than on good governance, and he asked why the ruling party seemed to be concentrating more on political campaigns than on dealing with governance issues when it had been in office for under two years.

The PDP chieftain cautioned that the weakening of democratic institutions could lead to national instability and assured that the party would exhaust all its resources to avert this scenario. (NAN)
