Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has claimed that Nigeria has become more expensive to live in than Kenya.

This statement came in response to President Bola Tinubu’s recent remark during his visit to Bayelsa State, where he stated that fuel prices in Nigeria are cheaper than in Kenya and other African countries.

In a rebuttal to Tinubu’s comments, Atiku, through his spokesperson Phrank Shaibu, issued a statement on Saturday, describing the comparison as “shallow” and misleading, calling it a significant distortion of the daily experiences of Nigerians.

Atiku questioned why the President would choose to focus solely on fuel prices as a measure of economic well-being while ignoring more critical factors like purchasing power, income levels, and overall cost of living.

He pointed out that when you take the broader cost of living into account, Nigeria is more expensive than Kenya, despite the lower fuel pump price in Nigeria.

“While fuel prices in Nigeria might seem lower than those in countries like Kenya or South Africa, this comparison crumbles when you consider the full economic context,” Atiku explained.

“Today, Nigeria is a more expensive country to live in than Kenya, with the average cost of living much higher, even though fuel prices are lower,” he added.

Atiku also highlighted that Kenya’s minimum wage is double Nigeria’s N70,000.

“Even more concerning is the collapse in earning power. Kenya’s GDP per capita is nearly twice Nigeria’s, and a minimum wage earner in Nairobi earns the equivalent of about N170,000—more than twice Nigeria’s N70,000,” he stated.

In Nigeria, the fuel price ranges from N1,290 to N1,350 per liter, while in Kenya, it exceeds N1,800.
