Rauf Aregbesola, former Minister of Interior, and Rabiu Kwankwaso, former Governor of Kano State, met in Lagos to strategise ahead of the 2027 general election.
This comes just a few days after Aregbesola’s political faction, Omoluabi Progressives, abandoned the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The group’s spokesperson, Abosede Oluwaseun, stated that members decided to leave the APC due to ostracism from the party, suspension and expulsion of leaders without a fair trial, and continual denigration of the structure.
A few days later, the APC in Osun removed Aregbesola for suspected anti-party conduct.
According to ZINGTIE, Aregbesola, who was governor of Osun from 2010 to 2018 on the platform of the APC, also served as a minister during the government of former President Muhammadu Buhari between 2015and 2023.
Discussions of forging a coalition to confront the APC are gathering traction ahead of the 2025 national elections.
Additionally, politicians from various opposition parties have been having strategic discussions.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar hosted a breakfast meeting at his Adamawa mansion in November with Peter Obi, a Labour Party (LP) chieftain.
In January, Nasir el-Rufai, the former governor of Kaduna, Hamza Al-Mustapha, the late Sani Abacha’s former adviser, and other politicians gathered in Abuja.
The conference was called by Shehu Gabam, national chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
