Niger State Governor Mohammed Bago has disclosed that he is unable to fire ineffective political appointees since he is running for a second term.

During the inauguration of newly appointed commissioners and elected chairmen and vice-chairmen of local government districts throughout the state on Friday, Bago revealed the information, claiming that his fear of political repercussions had prevented him from taking effective action.

In an effort to promote efficiency and lessen complacency, the governor advocated for elective and political office holders to serve only one term.

“I am an advocate of a single term of governance. Everything in Nigeria is now being tied to politics. There are things I would have done today, but I am deferring them until after the election,” Bago said.

He stated that certain officials continued to be a drain on the system despite their frequent exam failures, which prevented them from being promoted.

“If I had a single term, I would have been more decisive. Special advisers, board directors, and others would have given their best because they would have just one shot in governance.”

“Everyone is thinking about tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow, Today is our tomorrow” Bago noted, emphasizing that procrastination is a significant problem in government.

Decentralized policing would improve security and social fairness, according to the governor, who also endorsed state and local law enforcement.

“State police is a reality. We need community policing to ensure social justice and safety in our society,” he added.
